Just over an hour by train from Tokyo. A tour of the great shrine of Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, the bamboo garden of Hokoku-ji, the Hase-dera temple and the Great Buddha of Kamakura, connecting temples, nature and the coast in a single day.
Departing from Kamakura Station, first heading east to the shrine and bamboo garden. Then back to the station, heading west on the Enoden train, heading to the Big Buddha and Hase-dera. If time lasts, we end up by the sea, in Enoshima.
Direct train on the JR Yokosuka or Shonan-Shinjuku line, without transfers, to Kamakura station. Leaving early in the morning is the best way to avoid the crowds.
The heart of Kamakura. You walk in a straight line along Wakamiya-oji Avenue, cross a large torii and, after climbing the stairs, the vermilion shrine opens. The grounds are spacious, with an arched bridge and a lotus pond, ideal for starting the day calmly.
Known as the "bamboo temple", with a path between some 2,000 bamboo stalks where the light gently filters through the leaves. It is one of the most serene corners of Kamakura. By paying a little more, you can drink matcha tea with a view of the bamboo forest.
From the top of its terraces you can see Yuigahama Bay. It is home to one of the largest wooden statues in Japan, the eleven-headed Kannon, and moss-covered gardens with hundreds of small Jizo figures, protectors of children. Five minutes walk from Hase station.
More than 13 meters high, exposed to the elements since the 13th century. The bronze statue of Amida Buddha has watched over Kamakura for more than 700 years. You can go inside (with additional cost) to see how it was cast. The highlight of the day.
Cross the bridge to the island and, climbing stairs and paths, you reach the three shrines of Enoshima Jinja. From the viewpoint at the top, on clear days, you can see Mount Fuji. At sunset, the sun falling over the sea is the perfect ending before returning to Tokyo.
