The day combines the feudal power of the Tokugawa with the daily life of the city: castle, garden, temple, shopping district and a large Shinto shrine, all within Nagoya.
Built at the beginning of the 17th century by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, it is recognizable by the pair of golden dolphins (kinshachi) that crown its main tower. Inside, the restored Honmaru Hall displays screens and decorative details that recreate the splendor of the original feudal residence.
A traditional Japanese garden, with ponds, artificial waterfalls and stone bridges, built on the former grounds of the Tokugawa family of Owari. The adjacent museum preserves personal objects, armor and works of art inherited directly from this samurai lineage.
A blue-roofed Buddhist temple in the middle of one of Nagoya's liveliest and vintage shopping areas. Osu's covered streets combine electronics stores, second-hand clothing, street food stalls and cafes — the best place of the day for lunch and aimless strolls.
One of the most revered Shinto shrines in Japan, considered the guardian of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of the three imperial royalties. Surrounded by a centuries-old forest of more than 1,000 trees, it offers a slow and serene end to the day, very different from the hustle and bustle of Osu.
