Hakone Torii at Lake Ashi
TOKYO → HAKONE · DAY TOUR

Hakone, between volcano and lake

Hot springs, a lake and, if you're lucky, Mount Fuji

Just over an hour from Tokyo. A tour of the Hakone-Yumoto hot spring village, Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine and the Owakudani volcanic valley, with the chance to see Mount Fuji if the sky is clear.

Hakone usually has the changing sky. On very clear days, Mount Fuji is clearly visible from Lake Ashi and Owakudani; If it is cloudy, it will not be visible. Thank you for your understanding.
The tour

From Hakone-Yumoto, the classic circuit climbs up the Owakudani volcanic valley, down to Lake Ashi by boat, and ends at the waterside shrine. If time permits, a final stop at the Crystal Forest Museum.

Owakudani — the volcanic valley

The Hakone cable car flies over an active valley, with sulfur fumaroles rising from the earth. At the upper station you can try the famous "black eggs", cooked in the volcanic hot springs, which according to tradition add years to your life. On clear days, Mount Fuji peeks out from behind the mountains.

Lake Ashi — pirate ship cruise

A striking "pirate ship" crosses Lake Ashi heading to Hakone-machi/Moto-Hakone. The calm waters, surrounded by forested mountains, offer one of the most photographed postcards of Japan — with Mount Fuji looming in the background when the sky allows.

Hakone Shrine

Hidden among a forest of ancient cedar trees, the shrine is famous for its vermilion torii that juts directly into Lake Ashi — the “Heiwa no Torii,” a symbol of peace. It is one of the most photographed corners in all of Hakone, and it is worth walking to the shore to see it up close.
